How can you obtain an identity card for a child under the age of 12?

For Belgian nationals

The Kids-ID is an official electronic document issued to Belgian children under the age of 12. It contains all of the child’s identity data and a photo.

It allows the child to travel within most European countries, as well as certain countries outside Europe. For further information, visit the Ministry’s website http://diplomatie.belgium.be/ Foreign Affairs

This card includes a range of safety features. The integrated chip and a secret code allow children over the age of 6 to authenticate themselves on the Internet. The card can also be linked to the “Allo Parents” service, to immediately alert parents if their child is lost or faces a major problem

For further information about the Kids-ID, visit the websites and http://www.alloparents.be/ and www.eid.belgium.be

Practical procedures:

Please note: The process takes 3 to 4 weeks!

One of the parents must visit the town hall in the child’s place of residence to make the application. The child must be present!

You will need one identity photo:

  • The photo must be recent and in colour.
  • The background must be white.
  • The person's face must not be covered (no hat, scarf or dark glasses).
  • The person must be alone in the photo.

The identity card costs 3 euros.

3 to 4 weeks after submitting the application, the parent will receive codes by post.

He or she must take the codes to the town hall which will then issue the Kids ID.
