Last wishes, euthanasia, organ donations

Last wishes:

You can register your last wishes in your town of residence.

This could relate to your chosen method of burial/cremation:

  • burial of mortal remains
  • cremation with the ashes buried in the cemetery grounds
  • cremation with the ashes placed in the cemetery columbarium
  • cremation with the ashes scattered in the cemetery garden
  • cremation with the ashes scattered in the sea within Belgian territory
  • cremation with the ashes scattered in a place other than the cemetery or the sea in Belgian territory
  • cremation with the ashes buried in a place other than the cemetery
  • cremation with the ashes stored in a place other than the cemetery

This could also relate to the denominational or non-denominational rites for the funeral, as well as a statement noting the existence of a funeral contract.
If you wish to register your last wishes, you need to visit the Town Hall with your identity card. Your statement will then be recorded in the national register where it can be accessed by all municipalities within Belgium.

Euthanasia:

An advance statement of euthanasia allows you to state your agreement to euthanasia, in certain very precisely defined situations.

This statement is made in your town of residence and must be renewed every five years.

Two forms are issued to applicants to complete and return to the Town Hall for recording. A copy is sent to the applicant with acknowledgement of receipt.
If you wish, you can cancel this statement of euthanasia at any time. To do this, you must visit the Town Hall with your identity card.

Organ donations:

You can:

  • state your wish to be a donor
  • state that you no longer wish to be a donor
  • state that you no longer wish to be a donor and object to any donation
  • state your objection to any donation
  • state that you no longer object to donation
  • state that you no longer object to donation and wish to be a donor.

You can change this statement at any time by visiting the Town Hall.

You must bring your identity card with you.
