Declaration of birth

Births must be declared at the Town Hall of the place of birth within fifteen days of the birth (not including the date of delivery, Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holidays).

The declaration must be made by the father, the mother or by both parties.

The place of birth then sends the birth certificate to the town of residence, which records the child in the national register. The infant’s provisional identity card is then issued and sent to the parents.

This card does not allow the infant to leave Belgian territory. To do this, the child must hold a Kids-ID or a passport.
