The municipality of Rebecq comes under the jurisdiction of the following legal bodies:

Justice of the Peace [Justice de Paix]:

The Justice of the Peace hears all claims below the amount of €1,860, excluding those specifically assigned by the law to another court. In addition to this general jurisdiction, the Justice of the Peace has certain special powers whatever the amount of the request. For example: disputes relating to the hire of buildings, co-ownership, servitude, alimony and expropriations. The Justice of the Peace also has the authority to draw up adoption papers and deeds of notoriety (actes de notoriété).

Police Court [Tribunal de Police]:

The Police Court hears any claim relating to compensation for damage incurred as the result of a road accident, whatever the amount.

Court of First Instance [Tribunal de Première Instance]:

The Court of First Instance hears all claims other than those explicitly assigned by the law to another court. The Court of First Instance is also the appeal body for decisions made by the Justice of the Peace. The Court of First Instance also has a special remit. Some disputes must be heard by this court even if the value of the claim is below €1,860, for example cases relating to the status of individuals, marital status, minority, divorce, etc.

Labour Tribunal [Tribunal du Travail]:

The Labour Tribunal hears disputes relating to employment contracts and contracts of apprenticeship, disputes concerning social security, in particular industrial accidents and occupational diseases, employers’ obligations in relation to social security, unemployment, compulsory illness-disability insurance, pensions, annual leave, etc.

Commercial Court [Tribunal de Commerce]:

The Commercial Court hears disputes between traders relating to actions which are deemed to be commercial under the law and which do not come under the general jurisdiction of the Justice of the Peace. It also adjudicates certain specific areas (including disputes relating to bankruptcy, maritime and river issues, trading companies) or where the parties use a typical commercial instrument (for example, bill of exchange, promissory note) but once again only if the disputed amount exceeds €1,860.

Court of Appeal [Cour d’Appel]:

The Court of Appeal hears appeals on decisions made initially by the Court of First Instance and the Commercial Court, or by the Chairman of one of the courts, provided that the value of the application exceeds €1,860. This court also has certain specific powers, in particular in relation to pardons, certain tax procedures and various decisions relating to elections.
