The CPAS
Formerly known as the Commission d’Assistance Publique [Commission of Public Assistance – CAP], and then the Centre Public d’Aide Sociale [Public Centre for Social Assistance – CPAS], the Centre Public d’Action Sociale [Public Centre for Social Action] is a completely separate public service under the authority of the Municipality, the Province and the Region.
It is managed by a Conseil de l’Action Sociale [Social Action Council] formed in the January of the year following the local elections. Its members are appointed by the Town Council proportionately to the representation of the political parties at these elections.
The Rebecq CPAS is one of the biggest employers in the municipality: it has 102 members of staff, who report to the CPAS Secretary (equivalent to the Town Secretary). The CPAS’ main mission is to provide assistance within the municipality to those who need it most.
The CPAS is responsible for the day-to-day running of three main areas:
- social service
- young children
- senior citizens
